چکیده

background: endosonography is a distinct method in evaluating gastrointestinal (gi) structural lesions, particularly in the pancreatobiliary system. this procedure has made a fundamental change in the diagnosis of pancreatic mass lesions through fine needle aspiration (fna). this study aims to evaluate the results and efficacy of endosonographic fine needle aspiration (eus-fna) in patients presenting with solid pancreatic masses. â  materials and methods: this was a descriptive, prospective, case series study of patients who presented with solid pancreatic masses to imam khomeini hospital, tehran, iran over a one year period (from november 20092010-) in order to determine false negative cases, patients were followed for 6 to 12 months. â  results: a total of 53 patients underwent eus-fna with no complications. the results were diagnostic in 46 (87%) cases. the majority of patients were male (68%) and 81% had a mass in the pancreatic head. cytopathology results revealed 36 (68%) adenocarcinomas, 7 (13%) other malignancies, 3 (6%) benign lesions and 7 (13%) nondiagnostic cases. the frequency of nondiagnostic results was significantly more in masses smaller than 3 cm (6 vs. 1, p â  conclusion: eus-fna is an effective and safe procedure in the histopathologic diagnosis of pancreatic tumors. â

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Treatment of Pancreatic Cystic and Solid Masses

Pancreatic tumor is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose and treat because of its anatomical location and characteristics. Recently, there have been several innovative trials on the treatment of pancreatic tumors using endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) because it allows selective access to the difficult to reach target organ along the gastrointestinal tract and can differentiate vessels by ...

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Direct Intervention for Solid Pancreatic Tumors

Development and use of linear-array echoendoscope and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) have made endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) more of an interventional procedure than a purely diagnostic procedure. This is a literature review of previously published clinical studies on EUS-guided direct intervention for solid pancreatic tumors, including EUS-guided fine needle inject...

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Therapies in Pancreatic Neoplasms

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has evolved from being primarily a diagnostic modality into an interventional endoscopic tool for the management of both benign and malignant gastrointestinal illnesses. EUS-guided therapy has garnered particular interest as a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, a disease often complicated by its aggressive course and poor survival. Th...

Endoscopic ultrasound guided - fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), in comparison with gross and histologic diagnoses of pancreatic lesions

EUS-FNA of the pancreas is the preferred method of investigating and diagnosing pancreatic masses, both solid and cystic. Most solid tumors of the pancreas are conventional pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC). EUS-FNA has a variable sensitivity but high specificity in the preoperative diagnosis of pancreatic lesions, although the diagnosis for well differentiated PDAC is much more challeng...

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Pancreatic Duct Intervention

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided pancreatic duct intervention (EUS-PDI) is an emerging endoscopic approach allowing access and intervention to the pancreatic duct (PD) for patients with failed endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP) or patients with surgically altered anatomy. As opposed to biliary drainage for which percutaneous drainage is an alternative following failed endoscopic retrograde...
